Drum-buffer-rope system (DBR)

A conceptual framework that a “rope” links thee first operation in  a process to the slowest machine/operation (the bottleneck/constraint) in the process; this creates a gap in the process in front of  the bottleneck/constraint resource for a buffer to keep the constraint resource going.
