An account is used in accounting systems and software to categorize and group the transactions of the business. Accounts are by financial statement and type. Balance sheet accounts are assets, liabilities, and ownership/equity types. Profit and loss (income) statement accounts are revenue, expense, etc. Accounts may be grouped to additional levels like cash, accounts receivable, fixed assets, current liabilities, operating expenses, etc.
