Summary

When you make your goals T.A.M.E.℠ , you don't just achieve; you transform. And in that transformation lies the power to create a life that aligns with your deepest aspirations.

Setting and pursuing goals can be intimidating. We’ve all heard about SMART goals, but we still set goals and often fail to reach them. In my book 10-Minute Success: Goals!, I shared tips on breaking goals into manageable 10-minute sessions to help you find the time and focus on pursuing your objectives. Since writing that book, I’ve worked with many individuals and companies that were still unable to achieve their goals. From my experience with them, I realized that many people need to take their goals a step further. To succeed, it is essential to T.A.M.E.℠ Your Goals.

So, SMART goals are a starting point. But they often overlook the heart aspect. Goals have to motivate you, so I go one step further to T.A.M.E.℠ my goals. I make sure my goals are:

Tangible – I want to define the impact on my life or business. Then, what will it take to execute – steps, tasks, resources, etc. It’s easier to act when you can see the next step.

Actionable – When a goal is too big to be manageable, I break it down into multiple objectives that are easier to work with. For example, I want to stretch my capabilities without overwhelming my schedule, resources, etc.

Meaningful – Every goal must have value to me, whether that value comes from an internal motivation or an external driver.

Empowering – I seek goals that, when accomplished, enable the next goal or positively impact how I live and work. A positive by-product motivates me to work on more goals and energizes me to achieve more.

Taking Goals Beyond SMART Goals: Making Them T.A.M.E.℠

In goal-setting, SMART goals have long been the gold standard. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, these criteria provide a framework that feels like a trusted road map for success. However, as we evolve in our personal and professional lives, we may find that these goals, while helpful, don’t always capture the depth of what it means to pursue growth in dealing with our motivation, or lack thereof. To truly excel and create lasting change, we must look beyond the SMART framework and move toward something that encapsulates the whole transformative experience of goal-setting.

That’s where TAME℠ goals come in: Tangible, Actionable, Meaningful, and Empowering.

Tangible: Make Your Goals Real

The first step to elevating your goals is to ensure they are tangible, something you can see, feel, etc. TAME℠  goals create something that resonates with your heart. Generally, you break down a larger goal into smaller milestones representing progress you can touch, observe, and celebrate.

For example, rather than simply stating, “I want to increase my sales by 20%,” a tangible goal would be, “I will make five new customer connections this week and track the conversation to ensure I’m engaging with my target market.” By focusing on things you can actually do, your goal becomes more than an abstract concept. It becomes something you can measure with your own experience.

Actionable: Bring Your Goals to Life

A goal without action is simply a wish. Action is where the magic happens, where intention transforms into results. In the TAME℠  framework, a goal must be actionable, which means you can break it down into steps within your control. If your goals seem overwhelming or distant, it’s easy to get stuck. However, when your goals are actionable, you can focus on the present and what you can do today to move the needle forward.

An actionable goal could be: “I will dedicate 30 minutes every morning to focused work on my project.” The key is to ensure that each action you take is clear and doable. When your actions are small, consistent, and within reach, your path becomes much clearer, and you stay motivated because progress is always visible. It turns big dreams into daily practices.

Meaningful: Align Your Goals with Your Purpose

Setting a merely SMART goal can be a tick-box exercise that leaves you feeling empty after completion. For a goal to truly matter, it must be meaningful to you. Meaning is the heart of T.A.M.E.℠ : your goal should connect with your deeper values and purpose, sparking a sense of significance in your efforts.

Ask yourself: Why does this matter to me? What will achieving this goal do for my life, well-being, and relationships? A meaningful goal creates an intrinsic drive that fuels perseverance, even when obstacles arise. Rather than measuring success solely by external outcomes, a meaningful goal will enrich your life in ways that transcend material rewards. It could be as simple as improving your health, learning a new skill, or building stronger relationships. The impact isn’t always measurable in numbers; it’s measured by how you feel about the pursuit and how it shapes your growth.

For example, instead of stating, “I will finish reading 12 books this year,” you could say, “I will read 12 books that deepen my understanding of my industry, helping me to make a bigger impact in my career.” The meaningfulness of this goal lies in its more profound connection to your values and long-term purpose.

Empowering: Encourage Growth and Ownership

Finally, the most transformative aspect of TAME℠  goals is their empowering nature. A goal should give you a sense of autonomy and the belief that you can shape your future. An empowering goal enables you to take ownership of the process and boosts your self-confidence. It invites you to step into your full potential and choose how you want to pursue it.

Empowerment doesn’t come from rigid expectations or perfection. It stems from the belief that every step forward is progress and every setback is a learning opportunity. It’s about removing the fear of failure and embracing the journey. When you empower yourself to make decisions and trust your capacity to adapt, you open the door to deeper growth.

An empowering goal could be: “I will challenge myself to overcome my fear of public speaking by presenting at three different events this year.” Empowerment lies in your decision to confront fear head-on and transform it into a source of growth. It’s not about checking off a box but pushing past limits and expanding your capabilities.

Conclusion: A New Paradigm of Goal-Setting

While SMART goals provide structure and clarity, TAME℠  goals take things to the next level by grounding them in a more holistic, human-centered approach. By making your goals Tangible, Actionable, Meaningful, and Empowering, you create a roadmap for success and design a path for personal fulfillment and sustainable growth.

As you move forward, ask yourself: Are my goals just a set of metrics, or do they serve a deeper purpose in my life? Do they inspire me to take action, or do I feel like I’m going through the motions? And, most importantly, are they empowering me to become the best version of myself?

When you make your goals T.A.M.E.℠ , you don’t just achieve; you transform. And in that transformation lies the power to create a life that aligns with your deepest aspirations.
