As a child were you afraid of the dark? Did you need to have a light on to be able to sleep? When you can’t sleep at night for all the thoughts running through your mind, do you get up and turn on the light?

When we are separated from God, by our choices, our lifestyles, and our unrepentant spirits, we are in the darkest of nights. It is dark all day, every day. Every problem is magnified. Every challenge seems huge. We are relying on ourselves and our own limited perspectives and abilities. There is no lonelier or darker time than when you are alone and have only yourself to rely on.

Our language is filled with expressions like “The truth came to light …” This saying in particular seems to point to the knowledge of Jesus as Savior. Where there is light there is no hiding of who and what we are. The Light reveals all. Thank God that Jesus was sent to be our Light in the world and to know that His Light includes grace and forgiveness for our mistakes if we ask for forgiveness and turn back to Him.

John 3:17–21 (NKJV)
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.
