Getting Priorities Straight.

Getting ahead seems to be the overriding priority that most of us have in our careers and businesses. We want to be number one, ahead of the competition. We spend our time working toward that goal. But we are so busy working to achieve that next milestone of “success” that we often take our eyes off the true prize and priorities in our lives. How many of us get so involved in our business that everything business transforms into a “busyness” that keeps us from enjoying the life we have? Our business becomes our life: We eat, sleep, dream, and think about what is on our “to do list” even when we are supposed to be engaged in other activities such as worship, prayer, and relationships with God, our family and our friends.

For our businesses to be successful and for our lives to be truly meaningful, we must have our priorities straight. As Christians our first priority is our relationship with God. When God is in first place, everything that comes after that becomes richer, more meaningful, better. If God is not first, no matter what else you have, it is out of synch and disconnected from God. Remember, our God is a jealous God and He is to be front and center in our minds and hearts. We are to love no one and no thing more than Him.

Matthew 22:37 (NKJV)
Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

Find time for God every day. Spend time in prayer and reflection. Ask for guidance and wisdom in making decisions and leading your business. Get into the Word and learn what God has to say about how to live every aspect your life, whether personal or business. Become comfortable with doing business and accept its role as being able to be a ministry in service of God. Put God first and everything else will fall into place. It will not be a “free ride”; you will still work hard. You will still have obstacles and challenges, but everything will be in its proper place … following after God.
